Bunk location:  Aft crew compartment to begin with, then moved above deck to an overhang near the bridge.

 

Free-time activities while at sea:  Catch up on laundry.

 

Life After WWII:  

Moved from Ottumwa, Iowa, to McAllen, Texas in 1948.  He lived there for 23 years then moved to Cleburne, Texas in 1971.  He was president of the Kiwanis Club in Cleburne from 1978-9, and Layman of the Year for that organization from 1989-90. He also served as president of the Kiwanis Club in McAllen, Palm City, Texas in 1959. He was dedicated to community service and delivered Meals-on-Wheels in Cleburne for more than 20 years. He had also been a Mason for 50 years as of 1998. Mr. and Mrs. Ayers were former owners of Greenacres Memorial Park in Cleburne.
